My Visceral Response

One of the greatest things about living down here in Saint George is the beautiful scenery. One of my favorite past times is to hike around Saint George and the surrounding areas. By no means am I a professional photographer, but I do my best to try to take photos that I can look at and feel the same emotions I did the day the photo was taken. The picture that I chose was shot from my Iphone 6. I took the shot from the northern most side of Snow Canyon State Park.

There are many design influences in this picture. There are multiple lines in the picture. The ones I want to focus on the most are the diagonal lines that flow through the rocks and also shape the valley below creating energy to the viewer. The horizontal lines far off in the back give the sky a peaceful feel about it. There is a lot of form in the picture that pops out and really grabs the viewers attention. The main one that I want to focus on is the rocks right at my feet. The picture shows the rocks below, but we are not quite sure how far down they are. It almost makes a feeling of curiosity. There are so many different shades of color in this picture, but the ones I want to focus on the most are the rusty, red color and the pearly, white of the rocks. The area is known for these two colors although they may be a different shade in the eyes of different viewers. The cloud cover gives off a softer tone in some areas of the picture. There is not a whole lot of negative space in this picture because there is so much going on in it. Thanks to the texture of the clouds the small portions of blue sky are the only negative space. The texture of the picture brings it all together. There is a softness to the rocks up close, but in all reality they are quite rough. The rocks below give off a feeling of terror because they are sharp and jagged. I really feel stupefied every time I look at this picture. I don't always take pictures, but when I do I try my best to make them give the viewer lasting impressions.
